The Basics
If you grew up in the Philippines, chances are you've sat around a banig or a dining table playing Tongits with your lolo, tita, or barkada. It's one of those games that cuts across all generations — from high school students to barangay officials, everyone knows how to play.
Tongits is a three-player rummy-style card game played with a standard 52-card deck. The goal is simple: reduce your hand's total point value to zero — or as close to zero as possible — before your opponents do. You do this by forming sets (three or more cards of the same rank) and sequences (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit), then discarding the rest.
What makes Tongits special is the mix of skill, reading your opponents, and a little bit of tira-suerte (luck). It's fast, it's intense, and every round keeps you on the edge of your seat. At jilijili1, we've brought this beloved Filipino pastime to the digital world — and made it even better with real-money tables, smooth mobile gameplay, and a community of thousands of players nationwide.
Rules & Gameplay
Never played before? No problem. Here's how a standard game of Tongits works at jilijili1.
One player is designated the dealer. The dealer gets 13 cards; each of the other two players receives 12 cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the center.
On your turn, draw a card from the pile. You can then meld (lay down) valid sets or sequences from your hand, and add cards to existing melds on the table.
A meld requires at least three cards. Once melded, other players can "burn" a card onto your meld if it fits — this eliminates that card from their hand.
After drawing, you must discard one card face-up to the discard pile. Choosing which card to discard is where strategy really comes in — you don't want to help your opponents!
At any point, you can call "Fight" to challenge another player — they must prove their hand score is lower than yours. Timing this right is a key skill.
You win instantly if you empty your entire hand ("Tongits!"). Otherwise, the player with the lowest remaining card value when the draw pile runs out wins the round.
Card Values
In Tongits, you want low points. Here's how much each card is worth when counting your remaining hand.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 pt | Lowest value — great for winning |
| 2 to 9 | Face value | 2 = 2 pts, 3 = 3 pts … 9 = 9 pts |
| 10, Jack, Queen, King | 10 pts each | High-value cards — meld or discard quickly |
Pro tip: Face cards (10, J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each — the most dangerous cards to hold in your hand. Your first priority should be melding or burning these high-value cards as early as possible. Holding even one King and one Queen in a losing hand means 20 extra penalty points.
